WE WON, WE WON, WE WON!

So, after a smashing 2-0 victory over UCD on the same day that the Irish rugby team finally won the triple crown AND the grand slam, Dublin's D2W haven secured top position in the division even with one more match to go. No one can catch us now! We did it!

Association cup match

Well, Santry PW came, saw and conquered, but not without DVC D2 women putting up a fight in the 2nd set which ended very close in points (25-22 if I don't remember wrong). It was a great experience and the first match where we had to play three sets this season:-) Well done everyone, the workout was worth it!

10 matches, 10 straight wins....

With only 4 matches to go, D2W have won all 10 matches so far in two sets. Looking forward to the last couple of matches and indeed the Association cup match against Santry. See fixtures for final results!

New season!

New season, more training, hopefully not too many cold and flu cases. Training has started and Division 2 have their first two matches for the spring season coming up on January 25th. Please note the updated fixture list under 'fixtures' for Division 2 women. One match has been been rescheduled for a later date.

Otherwise, we'll just keep up the tempo!

Great performance - dissappointing result!

The Premier Women met Santry on Saturday evening while most of you were in the pub watching the Hakka!!

Unfortunately, despite a great performance all round and a tight score in each set (28-26;25-23 and 25-20) the girls didn't succeed in grabbing even one set.

With 3 out of 4 victories in the league to date losing naturally left the team dissappointed. However, the bright side of this result is that Aer Lingus beat Newbridge 3-0 this weekend so, it is all even in the top of the PW table with all of the top four dropping a match. The challenges are yet to come with Newbridge on the 29th and Aer Lingus on the Dec 12th.

Despite, losing our great team mates Julia and Zdenka, the team is still looking very strong and welcomes the new arrival of Olga from Latvia and confirmation that MiniJo will be with us until at least the end of the year!!

Match success

And Division 2 Women won their match 2-0 against Newbridge Panthers! It was a short and sweet match which saw a strong performance from all girls. Thanks to Newbridge who made it all the way up to Dublin for the Sunday game!

Match weekend

As another great match weekend approaches fast, we'll see the Premier Women and Division 1 men try beat the respective UCD teams on Saturday, while Division 2 women take on Newbridge Panthers on Sunday.

Good luck to everyone and great HALLOOOWEEEN to everyone!

To report back Monday morning with results:-)

Volleyball Rules Seminar - Thursday 16th October

Did you know ?

"Mintonette" was the original name given to the game we now know as volleyball. It was invented in 1895 by a Mr William Morgan as an "alternative to Basketball" and was done in an attempt to provide a less physically exerting pastime !. Obviously Mary Lalor never read that bit judging by some of her training sessions.

Needless to state the rules of the game have changed significantly since 1895, but how well do you think you know all the current rules ?.

For instance, did you know that it is planned to increase a team to 14 players that can include 2 Liberos?. Or, did you realise that the Libero can actually spike the ball ?.

The game is constantly evolving, and a greater understanding of the rules of the game can enhance ones knowledge of the game and as a consequence increase and enhance the enjoyment and/or the indiviuals competitive level.

So whether you think you know all the rules or freely admit that you don't, why don't you come along to Benildus this Thusday 16th at 7:00 for a rules seminar. It is planned to take place for c.30 mins (7:00 to 7:30) before the PW training session and the fun session.

If anyone has a specific rule or question they would like to raise, kindly e-mail me by return and I will make sure it's covered on the night.

Failing suggestions from the "general membership", I will talk through some of the more difficult rules of the games (e.g. positions and rotations). I will talk about the role of the Libero - what exactly can they do, or should that be "what can't they do"?. I will also talk about the role of the Captain, and what can they ask of the referees during the match?.

So, if you're a referee and think you might like to know a little bit more on some of the above, or if you a serious player or just a fun player, but would like to know that little bit more about the game you love, then I look forward to seeing you there.

Alan Gormally,

International Volleyball Referee

Hear, hear! (DCU tournament)

As the premiers, the women's division 2 team really enjoyed the tournament too, and it was a great way to start the season and get to know a team of mostly new members. Although we didn't quite succeed to the same degree as the premier women ;-) we had a good weekend and we now know where our strengths as well as weaknesses lie.

Great DCU tournament weekend!

Both women teams of the club have participated in the DCU pre-season tournament this past weekend. It was great fun! Premier women team made it all the way to the finals, where they fougt as much as they could.Unfortunately, their battle finished in the  5th tie-break set with score 15:13 for the UCD club. What a great match, tournament and weekend! All premier women team is happy to kick off the seasons with such a result and will train hard to challenge other teams on 40th VAI anniversary tournament. Well done, girls!

Championship success for DVC

After a very successful championship for DVC, the women's team won the Junior cup, while the men's team were runners up in the intermediate championship.

The women edged out defending champions Newbridge Cheetahs, and the men finally fulfilled their potential to get to the final, only to loose to division 1 league winners, Cork.

Division 1 men end season on a high

A skeleton crew of 6 made the long journey down to the magnificent sporting facilities at UL, to play CBphoto. It was an early start (8am) but team captain, Yuichi, promised to stop at a great breakfast diner outside Dublin. After nearly 2 hours of starving we arrived to find the diner (near Roscrea) had been closed down for the last year. Nice one Yuichi! Despite the ominious start, our match went quite well, winning two very close sets, before adding the third. This was our second 3-0 in a row, and should be a good sign for the championships in UCD on the 19th April.

New Site to Launch!

It has been a long time in coming.  As the Dublin Volleyball Club continues to grow both on and off the court we decided it best that our site grow with the times as well.  We will now be able to better communicate with our members, family and friends in a much more efficient manner.

We would like to express a personal thanks to Dog City Designs in Kingston, Ontario, Canada for taking the time to put together what we think is a great product.  The team ad Dog City Designs really listened to our input and implemented everything that we needed in a timely manner!
